There’s no mistaking the passion in Angelia Yawn’s voice over the phone “This has been a dream of mine, to open a studio space where artists can work away from the distractions of daily life.” Her enthusiasm to “inspire others by helping them find the artist within” is a work in progress at The Painting Studio located behind the doors at 4045 Helena Road, the house formerly occupied by Bead Biz.

Inside the freshly cream-painted space, sunlight filters in from north, east and west over the hardwood floors where soon, easels will line the walls and table workspace will be available for children’s summer art classes. Openings for seven resident artists are available. Each resident artist will have their own key with 24-hr access, locked storage space and share rent and utilities for $165 monthly.

Formerly a legal secretary, and for eight years a stay-home mom, Angelia is mainly self-taught as an artist. She discovered the joy of painting when she sought therapeutic diversion during a period of postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. Married to Russell Yawn, her two children, Noah, eight, and Ella, four, are fourth-generation native Heleneans.

Angelia credits Jennifer Harwell, owner of a working studio in Homewood, for mentoring her work with acrylics and use of a palette knife. Her mission is to foster a supportive environment that allows each participant to develop a creative outlet bringing to their life the positive benefits she has found. She will offer classes for new moms and a morning class called Coffee and Canvas. This class will be open to anyone looking to join a group where personal artistic expression and camaraderie are the focus.

Local painter and muralist Dawn South, of Dawn’s Creations, will be on board at The Painting Studio. Trained as a graphic designer, her love for making kids art, furniture, and plaques support her desire to help with Autism Awareness. She donates a portion of all her proceeds to the Autism Society of Alabama.

Stop by and share Angelia’s creative and “happy state of being.” She is open to talking with others who may wish to teach a class or workshop in their special area of interest in the arts. Class schedules will soon be finalized. She envisions open houses, art shows and gatherings on the porch and a unique venue for local artists of any medium to meet, show and sell their work. “I’m just going with my heart on this!” she says.

  1. Laura, this is beautifully written. Please consider submitting this to your local paper. I recall that you used to say that you wanted to write for publication….You definitely have the talent. Very clean. Punchy. Great concept w/ studio, too. I am going to submit the link to your blog about the studio to the Tennessean’s MusicCityMoms.com as creative mothering inspiration. Great job!
